Dress up your DampRid:
Poppies Container

So I don't know how popular this stuff is, but I just found out about DampRid. It's this product that is supposed to suck moisture from the air to keep things from getting musty, and as far as I can tell, it really does work. The agent that "sucks the moisture" is actually just a chemical called calcium chloride. When it absorbs water from the air it turns into a liquid itself. DampRid sells the chemical along with these special containers that drain the liquified calcium chloride into a chamber below.

The only problem is – the containers are ugly. I mean, they'd be fine for a closet or something, but I needed to do some dehumidifying in my bathroom. So, I designed these poppies!

They are made of a thin aluminum tube from the hardware store, a small funnel (which I painted silver to match the aluminum), and the top of a plastic wine glass (which I painted the colors of poppies). I sawed off the bottom of each wine glass, leaving a hole just smaller than the mouth of the funnel, and hot-glued all the pieces together. I then cut some big circles of cheesecloth, put about a half-cup of calcium chloride in each, and tied them up in bundles. The idea is that the large mouth of the wine glass will allow maximum exposure of the calcium chloride to the air, and the liquified stuff will get funneled through the aluminum tube and collect in the bottom of the jar. (I happened to have this adorable Ball jar from Kim's wedding, as you will see in a later post.) The cheesecloth keeps the granules of calcium chloride from clogging the funnel, and also protects against spills.

I keep it on a shelf by my shower, and now when I hang up a wet towel – it dries!
