DIY Advertising

As a DIY hobbyist with an advertising day job, I was intrigued to watch this segment from Slate on DIY advertising:

(Thanks for the link, Melissa.)

Of course, DIY advertising is as old as advertising (think this type of thing). But the story of the modern ad as we know it has been largely a corporate tale.

Personal computers have been leveling the playing field since Apple gave us desktop publishing in the 1980s, and the Internet has now fully democratized its own ad space thanks to Google. However, buying media on national TV has always remained an exclusive privilege of ad agencies, until now. Once again, Google has brought this ability to anyone with access to the internet.

It will be interesting to see if this takes off. It is, after all, a bit of a retrofit, as television is quickly moving over to the web, where accessibility to ad space has already been widened. And, of course, the cost of running an ad in prime time (or even daylight hours) is still prohibitive for most DIY-ers. But the concept is cool. I'm inspired to make an ad for Eleventy...

  1. OMG! That is crazy! Google has the amazing ability to KEEP BLOWING MY MIND. I have this nagging fear in the back of my head that we're going to wake up one day and realize that Google has become too big and powerful for anyone to do anything about. But it's fun and interesting to see what they're bringing about on their way to mastery of the world.
